Welcome Aboard, Paul Morrison

Paul Morrison, the District Attorney (prosecutor) in Johnson County, KS, has decided to switch parties and run as a Democrat against the Kansas State Attorney General Phil Kline. I think this is good news for Kansas, as Kline is nutcase who is spending his resources on sexual witch-hunts, while Morrison is a good, solid man who prefers competence to ideology. It's also good for the Democrats in Kansas, who are showing themselves to be the only option for voters who are not crazed religious whackos. The Republican party in Kansas has been taken over by the far right, and clear thinking people aren't going to stay.

I think this is extraordinarily good news, for Kansas and the country. For Kansas because Morrison is a really sharp prosecutor. You can't ask or dream for a better individual to serve the body politic. For the country, because his switch shows that when the religious right gets too powerful, good, reasonable, responsible people will leave the Repug party.

Yea, me again. Remember, believer in ALL of the Bill of Rights?

I had hoped to at some point vote for Morrison, having worked for him. Alas, that won't be possible.

People participate in the parties they join for reasons of principle. You don't agree with the principles of the Republican party, and that's your right (this is America, where you have the right to be wrong). However, by switching in the manner in which he has, Morrison has shown himself to be driven not by principle, by by expediency. THAT is the real shame. And the person so driven ultimately can't be trusted to have central principles which guide him. That makes Morrison dangerous.

But then, expecting principle from the party of Bill Clinton is asking far too much.
