The Party of Values Voters

Bill Bennett: "I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could -- if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down."

He's getting that from a book, "Freakanomics", written by an economist, Steven Levitt. I've read a little bit about it on blogs and don't find his reasoning very convincing.

I read Bennett's explanation, in which he complains he was taken out of context - he didn't mean we should abort black babies. Frankly, I didn't take his original comment to mean that he was in favor of the proposition. I was offended by his implication that aborting black babies would decrease the crime rate. I don't know how he can explain that away.

There's no excuse for such comments. He's too well educated and has been around Washington, D.C. for far too long to pretend that he was just misunderstood.
