David Martin Explains the Jackson County Legislature

Money quote: "What I learned from paying closer attention: County government is, at its highest level, a mostly inconsequential exercise conducted by tedious people." I'll argue that they're not all tedious, but they all should be ashamed of themselves for not getting the Ethics Legislation passed. Even the good ones . . .

Why do we have a Jackson County Legislature? Actually, the better questions is, do we need a Jackson County Legislature?

Yeah because we at the county level there is also a judicial executive and legislative branch like at all levels of government.

How are "good" legislators going to pass ethics reform if they don't have the majority. It's not their fault.

Theresa Garza Ruiz for County Executive...or Mayor...or something. Either way our area will be better if she continues serving.

At least none of them used the term "chick." Have feminists reclaimed that word?

Why was the term "chick" used (allegedly) to describe the clerk?

Oh, Christ! You people are really trying to create a flap out of one great woman calling another great woman a "cool chick"?

Don't you have anything real to worry about?

I say Theresa Garza Ruiz for Executive or Mayor, Bullard for Sheriff, Steve Bough for Attorney General and James Tindall for Jail.

I laugh everytime I see some "anonymous" poster typing stuff on a BLOG like: "Theresa Garza Ruiz for County Executive...or Mayor...or something. Either way our area will be better if she continues serving." I guess she thinks we all can't recognize a poltician's obvious acts of self promotion. BTW, a word to the wise, when her or her legislative aid type this stuff from his desk at the county, the other staff can see them as they walk by.

Everytime there is some

Agreed, Garza is a little less than adroit at self-promotion.

That wasn't Theresa Garza posting. Dan Ryan can back up my belief that I know her she doesn't blog and has to my knowledge no intentions of running for Exec or Mayor. Plus, She's not the self promoting type. She doesn't need to blog I think her work speaks for herself. She's been so far a light at the end of the dark tunnel called the Jackson County Legislature.

Miriam -

I ignore junk like the comments directed at Theresa. They're just pathetically trying to get a rise. I agree with you 1000% - she is one of the bright legislative lights in the area. I know that she would like to get the ethics legislation passed, as well as some other good legislation, but she finds herself stymied by the bozos, and by the other good members who go along with the bozos just because it's easier.

I hope she doesn't learn to "get along".

Dan - what do you think about the use of the word "chick"?

Is it now generally acceptable?

WOW,
I am truly impressed that you would post a link that is critical of a bunch of Jackson County Democrats.
These bunch of twits couldn't legislate their way out of a paper bag.
BTW, while all of you are mentioning Theresa (well deserved) you are forgetting to mention Greg Grounds, who is the other half of the only two honest legislatures that we have.
Maybe Grounds could run for Exec, and Theresa could become Chairman of the legislature, then this county might take itself out of perpetual reverse gear.

Craig -

You misunderstand me if you think I am uniformly supportive of Democrats when they don't deserve it. You might enjoy my writings about Claire "WWJTD" McCaskill, and even Jay Nixon, our next governor.

Who propsed the ethics reform legislation in the first place?

Mike Sanders wrote it and presented it to the legislature. It dies there.

Theresa is a great legislator. I too would like to see her be Executive. Grounds is a nice guy but when he steps up it's because Garza Ruiz had stepped forward first. I like the legislature except for Tindall. He is a thief, a racist and overall just not the holy man he tries to be while collecting donations from his congregation.

Dan,
I will take you at your word.
But I will be back in 2 years to see if you are willing to back the opponents of all these clowns (both in the primary and the general) when they come up for re-election.
With the exception of Garza-Ruiz and Grounds.

Craig - I never said I would support the opponents of all the current members. I'm way too smart to believe that's the correct solution.

Dan,
With all due respect.
Nobody could do any worse.
And to show I am not being partisan, that goes for Bob Spence too.
