McCaskill for Veep!

Rumors are plentiful that our local political leading lady, Senator Claire McCaskill, is on the proverbial short list for the Obama Vice President slot. Please, please, please let it be true!

The practical reasons are obvious. McCaskill could help Obama in Missouri - a purple state that could turn blue. She brings a blind loyalty to the Bush administration and its optional war that Obama lacks, and a willingness to support warrantless spying on Americans coupled with an abiding respect for law-breaking telecoms that is new ground for Obama. She could balance out Obama's out-dated support of free speech with an eagerness to use all the power at her disposal to squelch dissent and dictate orthodoxy.

In short, her selection as Veep would be a brilliant way for Obama to demonstrate to America that he supports mainstream Republican values, and will sell America out to the same corporate interests that are accustomed to owning the White House. In selecting McCaskill, Obama could assure a nervous America that change is a buzzword, not a goal.

But those are just the obvious reasons, and I know you expect deeper analysis from me.

Less obviously, but just as importantly, a Veep nomination would be an important step in creating a Lieberman for a new generation. Let's face it - Joe Lieberman is no spring chicken, and America needs to groom a national Democratic voice willing to stand up for Republican values. Just as Lieberman gained that national audience by running in the Vice Presidential slot of a far better person, McCaskill could become recognized as one of the faces of the Democratic Party by being the first tragic misstep of the Obama campaign.

Another less obvious reason for McCaskill to be Obama's veep choice would be her demonstrated willingness to tear down the Democratic Party to promote her own career. She, more than any other Democrat, is responsible for the horror that has been Matt Blunt's term as governor. By opting, against all good advice, to run against sitting Governor Bob Holden in the Democratic primary, she bloodied the eventual gubernatorial nominee and emptied his coffers, making him vulnerable to Matt Blunt. Claire McCaskill represents a "me first" approach to party loyalty that could pay off in ways we cannot even imagine today. Let your imagination run - Claire does. I like to think that she could be the first sitting Vice President to use her Senate seat to filibuster a Democratic bill.

Finally, and this is really why I would, in all sincerity, be thrilled to see McCaskill get the nod for the Vice Presidential slot, it would open up Claire McCaskill's seat for a real Democrat. In exchange for giving her eight years of state dinners and "B list" funerals, we would have an opportunity to run somebody great for her seat without the daunting and improbably prospect of winning both a primary and a general election. With Bond's rumored retirement upcoming, we could wind up with two Democrats from Missouri in the Senate.

McCaskill for Vice President!!

As long as we are sharing Truth through satire, submitted for your approval, the story of an ambitious young man in a hurry:

I am sure that Jason Kander fully expects to be appointed to fill out McCaskill's unexpired term because he is so brilliant and brave and just what the country needs in a time of War.

You know he has even been to Afghanistan (where he did God knows what because it is all very Hush Hush and classified for NATIONAL SECURITY REASONS).

Maybe we should just save a step and adopt a little old Constitutional amendment to allow Barak to put young Mr. Kander on the ticket? After all, Jason is SO ready for office because he has been pretending to be president since he was just a really little kid(a few years ago).

As a matter of fact, maybe we should just cut to the chase and have Barak step aside so that That would be so COOL. Jason could be president right away and his help-maiden Diana would be able to be given the vice presidential nomination (because she has always been so good at wielding a hatchet).

The Kander Administration already has important plans for REAL CHANGE on issues like what color to paint the Blue Room, and the endorsement agreement for the President Kander Wi Game.

And then, after the UN submits to the Kander Co-Prosperity Agreement, and Jason is named Imperial Ruler of the Known and Unknown World and Protector of Lesser Planes of Existence, Empress Diana and her faithful very-personal aide Gloria (who travels with the Mark the eunuch) will clean up the world of people with "wrong ideas." In the mean time His Galactic Wise-ness Jason the First will rule with all the benevolence deserving of a malevolent tyrant. And of course Dan, the Kander Team will not forget you because there will be a need for the creation of a Ministry of Truth and you can be its ever-so-loyal spokesperson (until the purges).

And just to think, it all began with finding enough Republicans to put a Democratic yard sing in their front yard to look impressive and build a feeling of inevitability in a state rep race. And he never even had to play an active role in any political campaign other than his own.

But be not afraid.

I agree with you that Jason is a great candidate with tremendous potential. The 44th District is fortunate to have him eager to prove is political mettle here.

All the Kander yard signs I've seen have been in Democratic yards, though I have to admit that there are SO MANY MORE of them than any other candidate's that it would be hard to guarantee that Jason is not already attracting Republicans to our side.

But the real question is does she call her employees Mammy and ask about their sex life?

You're not that old, Dan. Claire won that primary. And pretending that OTB didn't deserve a primary challenger is showing more loyalty to incumbents than to the party itself.

On the whole, a pretty pissy effort.

Dan, you may have to subtitle your blog "home of (commenters') pet peeves." No post that can't be turned to their one-note songs.

That said, it would be great to get Claire out of the Senate, if her replacement isn't appointed by someone Blunt-ish. I hadn't really thought of her as Joementum II; fits, and he may have used up his role. She needs a national schtick, like Joe's "nuke the whole mideast for Israel" gig, a few "Missouri for McCaskill" posters, and she's on her way.

Hey wait a minute. I must object to your glorification of McCaskill. I was hoping to get rid of Kathleen Sebelius !

Run somebody 'good' like Alan Wheat. Or Nancy Farmer. Or Jay Nixon. (If you really want to start casting stone at MODems, isn't Nixon a much better candidate for trying to be a closet Republican. He's in favor of the death penalty for child molesters and he submitted a legal document opposing the gay marriage decision in California).

Claire is a conservative Democrat, but she's still a Dem. Better to have someone on our side that right on most of the issues than to run a candidate certain to put Jim Talent back in DC. One last thing--to compare Claire to Joe-mentum is laughable. Last time I checked, she was working her ass off to not only get Barack elected, but to also get a larger Democratic majority in the Senate. Not sure how you can confuse this with Holy Joe, who is doing everything he can to not only get McCain elected, but also to damage the Democratic party.

I don't agree with her sometimes, but I'm damn glad she's in office.

In all seriousness, McCaskill would be a very smart choice for Obama. She is a conservative democrat and that's exactly what he needs if he wants to win over Independents. Her downfall, like his, is lack of experience. If not chosen as his running mate, I'm certain he'll give her a post - Attorney General would be a good choice.

No no no. McCaskill and Sebelius would be less than optimal picks. Obama needs a running mate with a strong national rep, lots of national experience and reliability and a bit of red state appeal to balance out the ticket.

I like Sebelius, and McCaskill is ok, they're just not the right fit at this time.

Does Beth still support McCaskill?

I think the person who keeps on coming here and asking about Beth (Gottstein? Lowe?)'s views is being snarky, but I don't get it? Why do you care so much about her endorsement? Why do you expect this blog to know?

Or, if you're being funny, let us in on the joke.

So, Dan, is Holden your BFF? Unfortunately he sure seemed to destined to lose the general, probably by a lot more votes than Claire lost by.

When you talk about Claire's VP nomination leaving the seat open for "a real Democrat" do you mean someone who will hand out earmarks like Kit Bond on meth?

Doesn't the author of this blog know Beth? Perhaps some people want to hear her insights, even if through someone else's blog?

Regarding the side discussion of "Beth" - the commenter posting as "don't get it" described my feelings exactly. I've always figured that the questions about what Beth thinks were some kind of attempt at a gag, too subtle for me to understand.

It's been a while since I've had a chance to talk to Beth, and when we do talk, we don't sit around and compare a list of candidates and endorsements to see where we agree and disagree. If you're sincerely interested in what Beth Gottstein thinks about something, I'd highly recommend that you not rely on me to tell you.

To whichever of the anonymice said (about the Claire) "Last time I checked, she was working her ass off to not only get Barack elected, but to also get a larger Democratic majority in the Senate." I'll agree with you there. But I really think her voting record is bows too much to the admin, even for a Sen. from a borderline state. She's not the total shill that Joe is, but she votes like him.

OT: Dan, maybe you could do a post on creating a fake name in a google or blogger account, so your threads would be comprehensible--or at least moreso. Even sockpuppets and trolls deserve to be recognized.

Sorry Dan but we should NOT be rewarding this woman in any way, shape, or form. She's such a Republican in Democrats clothing she may as well just switch sides. She's voted against the Dems on just about every major issue that's come up. Most recently she sold out the 4th amendment for the FISA bill. That's not conservative, that's just wrong. The same vote has me very upset with Barak and many other Dems as well.

Oh sure, she will be a great help.

The nursing homes her husband has, the drug related murder of her first husband,(what WAS he into while they were married? The American People would want to know!) etc.

She barely won the senate race.

All that dirty laundry will be examined VERY thoroughly if she is on a national ticked.

plus, she is not aging well.

I like Claire but here's what she will do for Obama: Zero.

Like with Obama's campaign team, it won't be Claire that delivers Missouri. If Obama wins it's because of Obama. He's a star and sells himself. His campaign team has the easiest job on the planet as they get to look good for doing nothing.

If the state goes blue it'll be because of the MO Democratic campaign team aka Nixon Campaign Team.

Personally I'd skip Claire and go for Sebelius. She rocks. She delivered Obama record numbers in the caucus, she is a two term democratic gov in a red state, she is the president of the board of governors, she'll deliver the swing vote, she'll actually deliver her state, she'll deliver the women's vote and she'll deliver the labor vote because unlike McCaskill she actually supports labor.

Plus to top it off she is no push over, she is ridiculously tough.

Look for Obama-Sebelius in '08
