I Am Rubber, You Are Glue . . .

Yesterday, within the course of less than 12 hours, I got called a "commie" by a Russian Jew, and I got compared to Hitler by a guy whose father was literally a member of the Hitler Youth. In less than a half day, I managed to cover pretty much the entire negative spectrum of 20th Century political thought.

Yes, I read about that. Why do you think that is, Dan? Seriously. I'm clueless.

It comes from a post I did that talked about the legitimacy of taxation for social needs. He took the position that if the state can take something, it can take it all. I took the position that it's not such a slippery slope, and we've been on it for a long time.

Dan, with that sort of broad base audience have you ever considered a cable talk show?

Both valid points.

I hope you assured the Russian that your New Economic Policy is the perfect blend of market devices and social considerations.

"I got compared to Hitler by a guy whose father was literally a member of the Hitler Youth." Re-read your IM log, Dan. I did. We chatted about the consequences of "Free Will" resulting in the "human condition"... and how your views could be viewed as "Fascist". My father was a "good German" ... got him captured by the Russians. He is one of the few who made it home, (guess I wouldn't be here, if he had not). Now we have family gatherings, where one of his daughters is married to a Jewish College Professor, a son is married to an African American lady ... and another is married to an Irish Catholic labor lawyer. As for me? God's greatest gift to me, remains my Susan. He loves all of us and is the first to stand up and condemn the teachings of his youth. I found your reference to me as "a guy whose father was literally a member of the Hitler Youth" offensive. Share with me, Dan: do you really believe the sins of a fathers youth ... should be visited upon his children, or negate in any way, their opinions or worth?
No Huggers, Dan

Karl - No offense was intended. And no offense was taken by me in the comparison. It just struck me as odd that I had both extremes taken in the same day.

I'm proud to count you as a friend, and I don't judge your father or you. You seemed pretty open about his past in the article for your Lawyer of the Year Award, so I didn't think my observation would touch a raw nerve. Please accept my sincere apology, and I should probably include one for Meesha, who is more accurately a Russian Jewish American.

Was the apology accepted?

Karl, gracious as always, accepted the apology and assured me it was forgotten. We're having lunch on Friday.

Sorry, I missed this post earlier. No apologies were needed, I was just kidding. I do however see things that remind me of my old country, I am the first one to say that not everything was horrible as some people would like to portray, but there is the reason why the soviet economic system failed and American did not (so far). I'd like to keep it this way since I'm here and I don't intend to leave. So once in awhile I'd like to point out the similarities and ask people to proceed with caution.
